Using Youtube videos as a source, artist Kutiman made some phenomenal musical mashups. There are historical performances, ebay product demos, high school band recitals, and low budget instrumental instructional videos. There is a mix of genres here, funk, bossanova, speedcore, dub, breakbeat and r&b.



I guess we are all playing the same song in the end, just not at the same time or place. It takes an artist to show us this.

Boba Fett Costume in Lego

Simon makes his Star Wars costumes a little differently. He builds his out of Lego.

I saw his Lego Darth Vader at Dragoncon 2007, and this year he will be premiering a full set of Manalorian armour build from Lego. All the hard goods from helmet, to gauntlets to shin tools are faithfully recreated in colourful blocks. It really is impressive to see.

The "Laugh-out-Loud Cats" are a turn of the century style single panel comic created by Adam "Ape Lad" Koford. It features "the exploits of one Meowlin Q. Kitteh (a sort of cat hobo-raconteur) and his young hapless kitten friend, Pip."

Adam mixes internet memes, news stories, and pop culture then stirs in "Krazy Kat" and "The Yellow Kid" simplicity resulting in something that really is magical. Such a combination of art, technology and interactivity could not have existed 5 years ago.

After I made a comment on one of his recent comics, a new piece was posted with my idea incorporated, within an hour. This I am a honoured to be part of the creative process.

Periodic Pr0n

Is there anything more regal or stately in the scientific community than the periodic table of the elements? If there is, I haven't found it.

Befitting the order and harmony found in the Mendeleev depiction of the periodic relationship of the elements, Theodore Gray has build a fine wood periodic table table. Each entry in the table has a small name plate in a specific kind of wood. The noble Gases are defined by the noble hard maple, the transition metals in white oak, rare earths in red oak. The uniqueness of Hydrogen captured in Gabon ebony.

Under each plate is a small sample of each element in as many states as can be mustered. Flakes of metals, tubes of gas, and atomic collectibles all are represented in the physical table.


Pictured here is Tungsten or "Wolfram." Both words are cool, and given its high melting point it is my favourite element.

eShopping Therapy

I have been working some longer hours lately and haven't had a chance to get much shopping done. Both the necessities and the luxuries have gone wanting. Given that, and the strong Canadian Dollar, the only answer is to shop online.

I used to think that the online experience would never replace the tactile pleasure of the brick-and-mortar store, but I was wrong. While shopping for Guitar Hero III, I had to go to five different stores. When I bought Guitar Hero: 80's, it arrived promptly from Amazon.

Here is what all arrived today, even though it was made up of four different orders from two different sites:

• New, better-fitting Jayne Hat via ebay from Liquid Fractal
• Two "Order of the Stick" comic books
  
• "Five Fists of Science" Steampunk comic book
• The complete studio recordings of Led Zeppelin.
• The entire series of "The Prisoner"

This assortment makes me feel good, for a while. I have also done my Christmas shopping for about half of the people on my list. Yes I do my Christmas shopping before Remembrance Day, I'm awesome that way.

Some may note that I did not provide a link regarding "Led Zeppelin." If you don't know who this band is, a Wikipedia page will not help you. You have either been living in a cave your entire life and the whole mouse-keyboard interface is confusing to you, or you don't have ears for hearing. Both tales are sad, but neither can be cured by a hyperlink.

Steam Wars: A film extravaganza

In the quest for steam, I came across the art site Steamwars.com. A simple site with a collection of art depicting some great steam powered robots of war. Some exiting stuff.

Re-reading the site more closely, I realized that the artist Larry Blamire is the writer-director of the indie cult film THE LOST SKELETON OF CADAVRA. He has made a treatment of this and wants to eventually develop it into a full film. Given the unadulterated awesomeness of "The Lost Skeleton," and the brain swimming goodness of steampunk, I really want to see this thing made.

Best Sci-Fi Shirt Ever Made By Anyone in the History of Everything

As many people already know, Universal Studios has been shutting down fans who have been making swag with Serenity themes, images and quotes.

In my opinion the fan made stuff was much more creative and available than the official stuff, which leaves fans with a tough choice. Do we only buy the official stuff in the hopes that the sales will mean a continuation of the franchise? Or do we back the fan made stuff that was filling the needs of the fans better?

Blackmarketbeagles.com has pre-emptively responded to this latest wave of Cease and Desist orders from Universal, and pulled his entire line of Serenity products.

Quantification of Awesome: Part 2

I've had some really good suggestions regarding the unit of Awesome measurement. We are not limited to one unit here. For example you don't need the same units to talk about small pieces of awesome as you do large sweeping swathes of awesome, for example 1 Tesla = 10,000 Gauss. Also important is a unit of density, to properly measure how much awesome per square meter we have.

On the table is:

• Tolkien
• Whedon
• McGregor
• Hodgeman
• Coulton

My suggestions will come later, when the time is ripe.

Quantification of Awesome

As a connoisseur of Awesome, I have been thinking about how to quantify the "Awesomeness" of the world around me. Once we have a base line of what One Metric Awesome is, then we can start making comparisons: That movie was 30 kilo-awesomes. That shirt is like 5 mili-awesomes.

Quickly we see need need for a name for this unit of measurement. Typically these things are named after pioneers in a particular field, such as Tesla, Henry, Gauss, and Bell. I kind of always wondered what would have resulted if one of the early discoveries in electromagnetism was made by a "Lipshitz."

Now this person we name the base unit of measurement after doesn't have to be the most Awesome thing ever, just a great example of it.

I have my own thoughts on this, but I'm looking for input from others.

Best headline in recorded history

"How did sex-for-drugs prison arrest turn deadly?"

From CNN.com I read this amazing headline today. Who could ask for more? Let us run the checklist shall we?

• Sex? - got it
• Drugs? - yep
• Law enforcement? - Prison officials and the FBI
• Violence? - deadly
• Famous person involved? - No.

The absence of a famous or semi-famous person makes the story a little less than full feeding frenzy, but the quality of the headline stands.

It doesn't give too much away and it draws the reader in. Huzza for crooked prison guards in Florida and the lucky copywriters at CNN!
