This is a very well done little mashup of the Star Wars and Doctor Who universes. There is a growing trend to include The Doctor in every franchise,  which is fine by me. This video was done by Kelvington, who asserts some form of copyright at the end of the video, though it is unclear exactly what unique element is left in the work..

Lost Doctor Who song from Craig Ferguson

Craig Ferguson prepared this Doctor Who song with lyrics and dancing for the cold open of his episode with Matt Smith. CBS could not air the performance because they couldn't secure rights to the song. It has now been leaked, so you know what to do, internet.

The Tragedy of Hamlet

I've been watching, of late, the BBC version of Hamlet with David Tennant and Patric Stewart. I don't know if my bias toward Tennant-as-Doctor-Who has coloured my affections,or if this is a genuinely unique and expert performance. I would have liked to see the original stage production with this cast, that delayed and made sparse Tennant's last turn as the Doctor, but it was not to be. I'm joyed that they adapted their performance for film and I managed to catch most of it on PBS.

Several clips can be found on Youtube, and this part of Act 2, Scene 2, is my overwhelming favourite.



I would write that they "make the text come alive" or that they "breathe life into the words" if it wasn't for the army of cliched hacks that would beat me 'round the head and shoulders for crimes both real and apparent.

Cute Doctor Who

The success of the Star Wars "Galactic Heroes" led to the line expanding to include other Hasbro licences such as Transformers, Indiana Jones and Marvel comics. Fans, like myself, really liked the chibi-esque deformations to beloved characters.

Other toy developers have followed this trend to varying degrees of success. UK company Character Group have done a great job with these Doctor Who Time Squad figures. The line is companion free, populated by adversaries of the Doctor, and one David Tennant Doctor. The product is still very new so I can't wait to see what they do with the later waves.

Doctor Who Season 3 mini-review

The following is a short personal review of Season 3 of the revived Doctor Who Series. It will be free of any major spoilers for the new season, but assumes the reader has viewed up to the end of Season 2 with "Doomsday." If you haven't seen it yet, go do so now. I'll wait.

CBC loving Canadians have yet to see season 3 of Doctor Who. Even though development funds for the revived series of Doctor Who came from the CBC, for reasons beyond me, the air-dates in Canada are months past the original run on the BBC. This leads to the situation of being able to buy the series on DVD before the first run in Canada has finished. This also leads to being forced to download "pirate" copies for home viewing. Does that sound right to you?

After downloading (and watching) the two newest Doctor Who episodes, "Smith and Jones" and "The Shakespeare Code," and I am thoroughly impressed with the new companion. Martha Jones is smart, funny, and asks all the right questions. The fantastic writing of Russell T. Davies an Doctor Who novelist Gareth Roberts make these episodes fun and a real treat. The story arc codeword "Saxon" is this year's "Bad Wolf," so keep an eye out for it.

When Rose left The Doctor at the end of season two, I wasn't sure I would enjoy a change of companions. In the history of the show, companions change more frequently then Doctors, but the companion is the character through whom we experience the wonders of intergalactic time travel. Rose Tyler had both wide-eyed nativity and the stunning good looks, which are fine qualities to have in such a situation. But I guess as the character gains confidence and wisdom, our ability to project ourselves into their place diminishes. We have significantly less in common with the Dalek destroying Bad Wolf/Time Goddess then we have with a teenage shop girl.

Now that I have an "in" to get current episodes, an I'm confident in Martha Jones, I can't wait for next Saturday's episode, when "The Face of Boe" shows up in "Gridlock."

I don't know what sort of commentary I can make on an image such as this one here. A nude woman hugging a Dalek? What is its origin? Who is the woman pictured? Where can I find more just like it?

Doctor Who has a posse

In a brilliant wave of viral marketing, the BBC set-up a series of websites to tie into the Dr. Who universe.
Some of the sites were used in the show itself, such as in the premiere episode of the 2005 series, Rose Tyler used a fictitious search engine called search-wise.net, which is set up for film and TV productions to use instead of a real engines. Faux military sites like www.unit.org.uk have password access areas, giving some background and depth to the organization from the series.

Sites like www.torchwood.org.uk, representing the Torchwood Institute, currently contain little information. There should be more information there when the Doctor Who spin-off series, "Torchwood", starts in the UK on October 22nd. The CBC premiere date is unknown by me at this time.

In producer James Goss's words, these dozens of inter-related sites are "the most ambitious online fictional world ever." This may be a bit of an overstatement, as the Lost collection of websites is extensive, and also makes use of services such as Myspace, Flickr, blogs and podcasts to make the viewer feel as a participant.

Obey the Daleks

EX-TER-MIN-ATE your way to fun! ThinkGeek has a great set of remote control Daleks, that would rock in any office style environment. Set these loose around your cubical for wacky hyjinks and hacky wijinks.

They are based off the "Dr. Who and the Daleks" movie so they come in three technicolors, which ship randomly meaning you only have a 1-in-3 chance of getting the colour you want, but the Daleks don't care.
