Dragon*Con 2007 Sunday report

The slow and sporadic posts recounting my trip to Dragoncon 2007 continues with the details of my Sunday activities at the four day convention in Atlanta Georgia.

After the late night festivities and libations at the Wolfpack party on Saturday, Sunday shaped up to be more sedate. I decided to get in line for one of the big panels in the big ballroom. The loss of some of the program space in the Marriott due to renovations combined with record attendance in the shape of full panels and the form of overcrowded common areas. I got in line an hour early for the "Star Trek: The Next Generation Reunion panel" and I think it was worth it. The panel was Brent Spiner, Jonathan Frakes and Gates McFadden. It was fun to watch them riff off the audience. Clearly they have done enough conventions to know all the questions, and know all the answers so they were going to have a good time with it.

After the panel, it was time for lunch so I made my inaugural visit to the newly opened Marriott High Velocity sports bar. The Bar looks fantastic. The food was good, but the service was ridiculously slow. The hotel knows the convention means a higher than normal number of people eating in the hotel over the weekend, and last year had hired additional staff and modified their shop hours to accommodate the demand. It didn't feel like they compensated enough this year.

Still, I was in no rush, so I casually sat in the bar and drank, whenever the bartender thought to take my order and serve the drink. Aaron Douglas from Battlestar Galactica sat at the other end of the bar, being all cool. I met a rock guitar player named Scott Banks and we talked about how to be cool when chatting with the celebrities. I got my chance to try being cool myself when Nichelle Nichols comes in, clutching a bouquet of flowers and, while standing beside me, starts looking for a place to sit down. When she started to walk away, I took the chance and invited her to sit next to me. She laughed a little and politely declined. Shortly afterwords, she and her entourage was led to a private room, when the rest of the bar realized she was there, they gave her a short ovation. She smiled and waved like a homecoming queen. Such are the ways of Science Fiction Royalty.

After some milling about people watching, and other related Con oriented activities, our group decided to suit up as the Crew and Companions of the Airship Vertigo once more and attend the Harry Potter Yule Ball. We attended last year and had a good time, so we sought to bring some steampunk to the party. It was a lot of fun, despite not winning the costume contest as we all hoped. Since the Yule Ball is hosted by the Young Adult track, the party was dry, which was probably just as well given the liquidity of the weekend up to that point.

Some highlights from the Harry Potter Ball were the Slytherin outfitted Jay and Silent Bob, and the Whomping willow costume replete with stilts.

Potterdämmerung [Mega-Spoilers]

The blog "Gibberish in Neutral" has given the world a complete retelling of the happenings within the last Harry Potter book, "The Deathly Hallows." Combining a Coles Notes style synopsis, lolcats grammar, penis jokes and some insightful critiques, the article is a hilarious contribution to Potter fan writing.

Here are some spoilerific highlights, so don't read this unless "you've finished The Deathly Hallows, don't care about spoilers, are or just a jerk who wants to find out what happens at the end and ruin it for everyone."

Just as Harry finds the diadem, who should show up by Draco, Crabbe, and Goyle.

Crabbe: PWND.

Goyle: 22LY!

Draco: Shut up you to.[sic]

Crabbe: WE R IN UR ROOM OF REQUIREMENT MESSING WITH UR JUNK!

Draco: I said shut up.

Goyle: U DO NO B TELLING US WHUT TO DO.

I had to chuckle at this too:
Voldemort: You need to die. You see, the uber-wand that I stole from Dumbledore's grave isn't living up to the hype -- it just isn't giving me enough cowbell, only cranking to 10, not the full 11

Summer Movie Trends Continued

As a follow up to my previous post, demonstrating blogosphere chatter of some summer films, I used the BlogPulse trend graphs to chart the buzz that Harry Potter has generated in comparison to the latest Pirates movie.

The first big Harry Potter spike we see on February first is for the announcement of the release date of Book 7: The Deathly Hallows. The HP blip on March 28th indicates the chatter that followed the release of the Book 7 Cover. This is about the same impact the release of the Pirate trailer had the week previous. The blip on May 31st during the Pirates craze shows the impact of the announcement of the Harry Potter themed amusement park. Of course the hockey stick at the end of the graph is the hype machine for the latest film, "The Order of the Phoenix." To contrast this I also graphed the impact of the June release of the new Fantastic Four movie, "The Rise of the Silver Surfer." Ouch.

This shows that the Book related announcements garner almost as much attention as the release of a large summer movie. However the Harry Potter movie experience dwarfs the impact of other summer film releases. Of course this analysis is a completely qualitative investigation, so if you dislike Harry Potter, you are free to dismiss its cultural impact. Or worse, one may manipulate these trends to show the shocking dominance of film media over book media, and popular books like Harry Potter over serious literature. Not that I'm cynical.

DragonCon 2006: Sunday Reloaded

A small correction to yesterday's post. After the dealers room but before the Harry Potter Yule Ball, I slipped into my "Captain Proton" costume and had drinks with the Jew Man Group and the Atomic Girls. They were all Blue. I was not. The only Blue costume I would like to do is Smax from Alan Moore's Top Ten series. I fear that I don't have the build to be an eight foot tall strong man.

But speaking of Alan Moore, I did manage to make it to the panel about his works Sunday before the Dance. The discussion was great, with David Lloyd on the panel. He was the artist and co-creator of the V for Vendetta comic series. He was on record as really liking the film, and realizing that the The Wachowski brothers were fans and handled the material with respect. Also on the panel was PVCDiva who added quite a bit of colour and substance to the discussion. ( She said she really doesn't 'do' characters" so she just wore her usual street clothes. Being a "freako goth," her street clothes included purple bustles.)

It was as this point that I went to change into Death Eaters for the Harry Potter Yule Ball.

While in line for the dance, we were recruited to participate in the little sketch before the bands came out. We were to form up behind the Slytherin and "Oooohh" when it was most evil to do so. It was quite the time. The costumes were fantastic: Four (4) spot on Minerva McGonagalls, Snapes of all temperaments, and a brace of Gilderoy Lockharts.

As Death Eaters, we had dark mark temp tattoos which I handed out to all Slytherin who would take one. A couple of people already had Dark Mark tattoos. That is commitment. I dress as a Death Eater because it is fun, but my heart is with Ravenclaw. To put such an evil symbol on one's arm where people can see it is a bit too far for my tastes.

Pictured here is "Ron in his dress robes" looking suitably disappointed. The person in question was rather happy during the event and only moped in-character for photos.

Of note, the Yule Ball lasted about 4 hours, ending at about 12:30, and everyone had a good time. The similar "theme room" parties at Con-version in Calgary ended at 1:00, and everyone bitched about it ending too soon. Think about that for a while.

Panels attended Sunday: One
Panel Total at the end of Sunday: Five
Milking a one week trip into a month of blog entries: Priceless
